PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has sworn in Lieutenant General (Retired) Ambassador Anselem Sanyatwe as the new Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture at State House in Harare this Thursday.
The new minister took oath of office in the presence of his family, with the two Vice Presidents also in attendance.
Speaking after being sworn in, Ambassador Sanyatwe said his ministry is a special tool for uniting the country towards the attainment of national aspirations.
“I am humbled with the confidence and trust that the President has accorded me to lead this special ministry. In essence, sports, arts and culture to me are strong tools for our national unity, youth empowerment as well as economic growth. It is with these that a nation is identified, it has our history and the aspirations of a nation,” he said.
He indicated that he will engage relevant stakeholders for the successful implementation of his mandate.
“It is my submission that I should by all means take on board all stakeholders as I embark on my new journey to lead this formation. My mission therefore is to develop, create and promote all the aspects that go by our identity in the best way possible for it to be recognised locally and internationally,” he said.
Before this appointment, Lieutenant General (Retired) Sanyatwe was Commander Zimbabwe National Army.
Lieutenant General (Retired) Sanyatwe also previously served as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Tanzania.
He takes over from Dr Kirsty Coventry who was recently elected as president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
