President of the Senate, Senator Mabel Chinomona has underscored the need for parliamentarians to be exemplary when representing the country on diplomatic missions.

Parliamentarians from across the country have converged in Bulawayo for a four-day diplomatic training workshop, as Parliament of Zimbabwe moves to capacitate legislators with skills and knowledge on how to handle diplomatic assignments.

Addressing delegates at the workshop, Senator Mabel Chinomona reminded parliamentarians of the foundation laid by the liberation struggle on Zimbabwe`s approach to international relations.

“As we engage in international relations, let us remember that Zimbabwe`s foreign policy has its foundation in our history especially the liberation struggle. The sacrifices of those who fought for our independence continue to inform our approach to international relations so that we continue to represent our country and its beauty in the best possible way,” she said.

Senator Chinomona reiterated the intricate ties between diplomacy and attracting foreign direct investment.

“Modern day diplomacy is tied to national development and global competitiveness. Diplomacy is about projecting a national image which attracts foreign direct investment, boosts tourism and draws full potential of human capital. You as the representatives of the people are the first port of call to Zimbabwe when you are out there so how you carry yourself sells you and the whole country,” she added.

Parliamentarians were trained on issues such as deportment, communication skills and effective negotiation skills, among others, after realisation that modern day global influence is achieved through purposeful and persuasive image management.
