THE Zimbabwe Women’s national cricket team, the Lady Chevrons are boosting their preparations for the International Cricket Council Women’s World Cup Global Qualifier slated for April this year in the United Arab Emirates as they are set to tour India this month.

With February nearing its end, it is back to the outfield for the Lady Chevrons who are aiming to qualify for the Women’s World Cup when they face off with 10 other teams for a ticket at the prestigious tournament in April.

Knowing the daunting task that lies ahead, the Lady Chevrons have trooped into camp ahead of departure to Mumbai India where they will have a showdown with Indian-based franchises as part of preparations ahead of the impending tournament.

“The setup there at OMTEX is that there is a massive facility, there is an indoor facility there is also quality in terms of the ground and nets and everything, even some opposition, quality opposition for that made. We’ve got some players coming back from injury who will also be part of the set-up,” said the Lady Chevrons Coach, Walter Chawaguta.

The return of veteran batter Shane Mayers will be a boost to the Lady Chevrons who are looking to field a full-strength team for the qualifying tourney.

Lady Chevrons player, Shane Mayers said, “It is always an honor to represent the country and to be in an environment like what we’re going into in India where it’s a lot of training, it’s an opportunity to give back to a game that has given me so much.”

Another player, Mary Anne Musonda said, “What we’re trying to do is to try and mimic the conditions that we will meet in the UAE so for us it is something that will help us acclimatise to the conditions that we’re going to face.”

The Lady Chevrons hosted rivals Ireland late last month as part of preparations for the 2024 Women’s World Cup Global Qualifier and the tour of India is expected to help the team with necessary game-time to challenge for honours in April.
