ZIMBABWE’S Lady Chevrons endured a tough start to their historic International Cricket Council Women’s Championship campaign after suffering a heavy 180-run defeat to a powerful New Zealand side in the first One Day International in Duniden this Thursday.

Playing their first match in the prestigious competition, the Lady Chevrons were up against one of the strongest teams in world cricket, with the White Ferns boasting several players who feature regularly in major franchise leagues around the globe.

Batting first, New Zealand posted an imposing 354 for 3, showcasing their depth and experience with the bat.

Zimbabwe’s bowlers struggled to contain the hosts, whose batting line-up combines international experience with players hardened by competition in elite leagues such as Australia’s Women’s Big Bash and England’s The Hundred.

In response, the Lady Chevrons fought hard but were eventually bowled out for 174 with youngster, Kellis Ndhlovu scoring a fighting half century.

Despite the defeat, the match marked a historic milestone for Zimbabwe women’s cricket as the side officially made its debut in the ICC Women’s Championship.

Zimbabwe’s inclusion in the 2025 to 2029 cycle expands the competition to 11 teams and provides the Lady Chevrons with an opportunity to test themselves consistently against the world’s top cricketing nations.

The championship also forms part of the qualification pathway for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, making the competition a crucial platform for the growth and development of women’s cricket in Zimbabwe.
