Kamandama Memorial Marathon draws thousands

THE Kamandama Memorial Marathon, an event held in honour of the country’s worst-ever mining disaster, took place this Sunday in the coal-mining town of Hwange.

Participants travelled from as far as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and several other nations, all united in running for a cause.

The spirit of the marathon continues to inspire the Hwange community as it rises from the tragedy that claimed the lives of 427 miners in 1972.

“We see a community that has risen above tragedy and is striving to move forward. The 427 are heroes and will always be remembered,” said Hwange Colliery Company Managing Director, William Gambiza.

Hwange Colliery Company Administrator, Munashe Shava, added, “This is a story that will forever remain with this community, but this marathon is testament that we are not only healing and rediscovering hope, we are also continuing to heal through development.”

“Kamandama will always remain with us in memory, but we will also stand strong and build our communities, our nation and our socio-economic well-being,” said the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland North, Honourable Richard Moyo.

Zimbabwe’s Isaac Mpofu claimed the 42km Men’s Category title, walking away with US$4 500.

True to tradition, Kenya left its mark on the event as Jacinta Chepkoech won the Ladies Category, also pocketing US$4 500.

While the marathon carries a heavy emotional history, the day was also filled with moments of joy and celebration, a reminder that even in pain, the journey towards healing always continues.
