THE annual JR Mawere Memorial Tournament returned better this time around, attracting international players over the weekend.
Zambian player Gillan Bwalya emerged victorious in the men’s open section, while Zimbabwean Tanaka Dzvinyai, who is currently pursuing her studies in Zambia, claimed top honours in the ladies’ category.
Tournament organiser, Mr Itai Madicha, noted that the fifth edition witnessed an impressive turnout, particularly from foreign players, signalling the tournament’s growing regional appeal.
Tournament Director Blessing Jemani highlighted that the annual JR Mawere Tournament marks a new chapter for the Zimbabwe Chess Federation and the development of the sport.
The JR Mawere Tournament, held in honour of the late Kwekwe Mayor, Johnson Rex Mawere, has become a permanent feature on the Zimbabwe Chess Federation calendar.
The tournament has gone a step up to become a platform for junior development after including a category for juniors.
