Jairos Jiri’s enduring legacy in empowering people with disabilities

A visionary philanthropist and advocate for disability rights, Jairos Jiri, remains a revered figure in the nation’s history for his outstanding contributions to the empowerment of people with disabilities.

Born in 1921 in Bikita, Jiri’s compassion for vulnerable individuals and his strong Christian faith drove him to make a lasting impact on the lives of those facing physical, mental, and sensory disabilities.

Founding the Jairos Jiri Association

In 1950, Jiri founded the Jairos Jiri Association, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing comprehensive support to people with disabilities.

His initiative aimed to address the significant challenges faced by disabled individuals in Zimbabwe, offering them shelter, food, medical care, and vocational training.

A Lifelong Commitment to Advocacy and Inclusion

Beyond providing essential services, Jairos Jiri was a passionate advocate for the rights of people with disabilities, striving to ensure their social inclusion and equal participation in society.

His efforts went beyond charity, as he sought to challenge societal attitudes towards disability, promoting dignity and respect for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.

Global Recognition of His Humanitarian Efforts

Jairos Jiri’s remarkable dedication earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights in 1983. Other notable recognitions included the International Symposium on Rehabilitation Award in Kampala, Uganda (1975), the Lions International Service Award (1977), and the Humanitarian Award from the Salisbury Union of Jewish Women (1977).

A Lasting Legacy

Though Jairos Jiri passed away in 1982, his legacy continues to thrive through the ongoing work of the Jairos Jiri Association.

The organisation remains committed to providing life-changing services for individuals with disabilities across Zimbabwe, ensuring that Jiri’s vision of dignity, empowerment, and inclusion lives on.

Today, the Jairos Jiri Association stands as a testament to his enduring impact, continuing to change lives and foster a more inclusive society.
