MASHONALAND Central Province is set to come alive with international boxing action as Mazowe prepares to host a major tournament aimed at promoting talent development, female empowerment and regional sporting excellence.

The international boxing extravaganza, scheduled for June 6, will bring together fighters from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo in what organisers say will be a landmark event for the province.

Organised by Roygree Boxing Promotions, the tournament is expected to showcase rising talent while using sport as a platform to raise awareness against child sexual exploitation and drug abuse.“This tournament seeks to empower female boxers. It is the first time to host an international tournament in Mazowe, and it seeks to show that women can do anything. We will raise awareness on the evils of child sexual exploitation and drugs. As promoter of this tournament, I wish to put our province on another level,” Roygree Boxing Promotions Director Roycee Archibald said.

The tournament card promises explosive action, with Zimbabwe’s Petronella Andison set to square off against Zambia’s Monica Chipelebwe, while Kudakwashe Chivundire will battle Malawi’s Tamari Mtabalika in another exciting contest.

In the headline bout, Alfonso Zvenyika, son of boxing legend Mosquito, will trade punches with Mvurwi’s Mike Moffat in a featherweight title clash expected to light up the ring.

“This fight on June 6, I will fight against Alfonso in the main bout, and we will be fighting for the title. I am confident I will win,” Featherweight boxer Mike Moffat said.

Roygree boxing promotions has been on a drive to promote boxing in the province after hosting two amateur tournaments, with the June 6 boxing extravaganza set to be the first international boxing tournament for the province.
