Infrastructure push spurs jobs, investment and urban renewal in Mashonaland West

Story by Tamuka Charakupa

GOVERNMENT’s accelerated infrastructure development programme is transforming Mashonaland West, with major construction projects in Chinhoyi and Chegutu creating employment, stimulating local enterprise and reshaping the provincial landscape.

The construction of the National Aids Council (NAC) multi-purpose complex in Chinhoyi has emerged as one of the flagship developments. The project, now employing scores of local residents, is rapidly becoming a symbol of renewed economic activity, community investment and skills transfer, consistent with the national ambition to end AIDS by 2030.

Local resident Ashley Tapureta described the development as a lifeline for unemployed youths.

“We are excited as the local community about the various construction initiatives happening. This is creating real empowerment, especially for young people. I had no job for a long time, but now I am working full-time. This project has brought income into my home and restored hope for many of us.”

Another resident, Clayton Sibanda, noted the practical skills being acquired on site.

“We are gaining real construction skills from this site, ranging from bricklaying, welding and even technical measurements. These are skills we will use long after the project is completed.”

NAC Mashonaland West Provincial Accounts and Administration Officer, Mr Edmore Muchena, emphasised the broader developmental value of the new facility.

“This facility will bring health and community services closer to citizens while opening commercial opportunities. Our focus as the National Aids Council is to strengthen community welfare in a way that contributes to national development.”

Meanwhile, about 90 kilometres away in Chegutu, the Government’s urban renewal agenda is reshaping yet another town, where a US$3.5 million shopping mall is nearing completion and set to open in January next year.

Addarcon Construction Project Manager, Mr Anopa Bushido, said the mall will bring modern convenience and investment prospects to the district.

“The mall brings retail shops, banks, food outlets and service centres into one modern space. It will create new jobs, improve convenience for residents, and attract more investors to Chegutu and surrounding towns, given the centrality of the location.”

Chegutu Mayor, Councillor Rydes Machekera, highlighted the long-term benefits of the project’s structure.

“The project operates on a 25-year lease, meaning the property eventually transfers to council ownership. This is central to our urban renewal concept. We are modernising the town, strengthening council assets, and setting aside more land for future expansion,” he said.

Infrastructure development has become a defining feature of the Second Republic, driving job creation, improving service delivery and advancing the national urban renewal agenda in pursuit of Vision 2030.
