A 51-year-old Harare man has been convicted of fraud involving US$200 000 in a botched investment deal.
Steven John Base was found guilty of fraud by a Harare court this Wednesday.
The court heard that the now convict misrepresented a business investment opportunity to Nicola Ruth Dickinson, claiming they would import goods from South Africa for resale in Zimbabwean supermarkets.
Base convinced her to contribute US$200 000, promising returns, when in fact no such opportunity existed.
The court established that Base’s actions, which took place between December 2021 and May 2024, were intended to deceive Dickinson, resulting in a loss of US$200 000.
Base will be back in court on Monday next week for sentencing.
