THE Government has started rewarding athletes who are excelling at the ongoing African Union Sports Council(AUSC) Region Five Youth games in Swakopmund, Namibia.
Zimbabwe’s envoy to Namibia, Ambassador Melody Chaurura, hosted a congratulatory dinner for Team Zimbabwe athletes based in Swakopmund, acknowledging their commendable performances.
The event was attended by the entire Zimbabwean delegation in the port city, with the Ambassador urging the young athletes to remain focused and strive for greater heights.
“You are the future of this nation, and I want to congratulate you firstly for choosing to represent the great country of ours, as governments we prioritise your welfare, and as young athletes, stay away from drugs.
Sport is the right path, and we continue to encourage you to do more,” she said.
The event, which brought together athletes, coaches, and team officials, was held as a gesture of appreciation for the young sportsmen and women’s efforts in hoisting the Zimbabwean flag high at the regional youth competition.
In line with government policy on sport development, athletes who reached the podium were recognised through monetary incentives on a sliding scale, with gold medallists receiving the highest rewards, followed by silver and bronze medallists respectively.
Coaches who have played a critical role in the team’s successes were also acknowledged during the ceremony.
Meanwhile, the games continue this Wednesday with athletics dominating proceedings at the Vineta Stadium in Swakopmund.
Team Zimbabwe is hopeful of adding more medals to its tally as it builds on strong performances in earlier events.
The government’s recognition of youth athletes comes as part of the broader national strategy to invest in sport as a viable career path, while nurturing discipline, patriotism, and healthy lifestyles among young people.
