THE Government has implored the media to continue playing its role in amplifying calls for accountability and shunning corruption.
This comes after several journalists received prizes at the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Media Awards held in Harare on Friday.
The Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere, who was the guest of honour, described the awards as a celebration of truth and consequence, exposure and accountability, all made possible through the commitment of anti-corruption champions.
“It is to inspire accountability and integrity through journalism at the same time to highlight the achievements that have been registered under the Second Republic to curb corruption, which is a cancer affecting socio-economic development. But also highlighting the importance of journalism and utilising responsible journalism, the intersection in terms of media as a driver of development,” he said.
ZACC chairperson, Mr Michael Reza acknowledged the watchdog role of the media in ensuring transparency and accountability.
“It is important that the role of the fourth estate is recognised in this manner. We can do our best in fighting corruption, but if no one reports it, then it means our efforts will go unnoticed. There are journalists who do responsible journalism and that is the reason we have to reward them.”
Meanwhile, the winners pledged to continue playing their part in ensuring zero tolerance to corruption.
“It is my first time to win this award and I feel motivated. As journalists, we must complement the efforts of the second republic in ensuring a corruption-free society,” a winner said.
The media’s role in fighting corruption has not gone unnoticed, with government acknowledging the pivotal role of the fourth estate in confronting the scourge.
There were different categories that include Anti-Corruption Journalist of the Year Award, Integrity Champion Award, Anti-Corruption Photojournalism Award, Public Service Accountability Award and, Prevention of Corruption and Awareness Award.
