Government’s rural industrialisation drive transforms lives in Matobo

THE Second Republic’s rural industrialisation drive is transforming lives in Matobo District, with the newly established Mhlasi Village Business Unit (VBU) improving livelihoods, strengthening food security and stimulating local economic activity.
The project, which also includes a solar-powered borehole, is set to benefit more than 400 households in Mhlasi and surrounding areas in Kezi.
Coming soon after Matobo successfully hosted this year’s national Independence Day commemorations, the initiative is another major Government intervention aimed at accelerating rural development and building resilient communities.
Local residents say the VBU is already making a tangible difference, particularly in the face of climate change and erratic rainfall.
“Even if the rains do not come, we are assured of something from this VBU,” said one beneficiary.
A local farmer said the project is creating new economic opportunities for families.
“We are going to sell these sugar beans and send our children to school,” the farmer said.
Another villager said the initiative is improving both household welfare and community health.
“We are now talking about nutrition and food security in our area,” the villager said.
Traditional leaders have also welcomed the development, describing it as a timely intervention for the district.
“We are pleased with what the Government is doing here in Matobo, especially after the successful Independence celebrations,” said Chief Nyangazonke.
Government is scaling up the Village Business Unit programme as part of broader efforts to climate-proof agriculture and drive rural industrialisation, with plans to roll out similar projects across the country’s 35 000 villages.
Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Honourable Edgar Moyo said the project’s impact extends beyond agricultural production.
“This project will not just provide water to our community, but will also have a far-reaching impact on nutrition in this area,” he said.
Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Professor Mthuli Ncube said the initiative reflects Government’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.
“Projects like this align with Government’s commitment to improving public health, enhancing education outcomes, empowering women and girls, and building resilient communities. This is in line with His Excellency President Dr E.D. Mnangagwa’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind,” he said.
