THE government’s urban redevelopment drive is gaining traction in Beitbridge, with the first phase of a major modernisation project scheduled for commissioning in March. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to upgrade infrastructure and enhance service delivery in border towns.

Stakeholders have welcomed the development, noting its potential to spur economic growth and improve living standards.

“The completion of these flats means economic growth to the town and the nation at large,” Entrepreneur, Mr Terry Mulowa noted.

“When government employees get good accommodation, it means improved service delivery, thereby strengthening the economy of the country,” ZIMBORDERS General Manager, Mr Nqobile Ncube added.

The Contractors are already in place, putting the final touches on some of the outstanding projects in the border town.

“We are currently on site working hard to make sure we meet the deadline of the commissioning of the first phase, which we believe we will,” Deputy Director, Estate Management and Provincial Coordination in the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities, Ms Nkosinomusa Ngulube said.

This comes at a time when the second republic has shown commitment to infrastructure development to promote economic growth and modern urban areas.

“Remember this project started long back, but as the Second Republic, we want to make sure we complete this project as soon as possible, but that will be done in phases, with the first phase to be commissioned next month,” Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Albert Nguluvhe noted.

Under National Development Strategy Two, the government has accelerated infrastructure development and modernisation of urban areas.
