THE Government says it is on high alert and has enough resources to deal with floods that are affecting some areas in the country.

This was said by Acting President Colonel (Rtd) Dr Kembo Mohadi, who was in Whunga, Gwanda Tshitaudze, highlighting that awareness campaigns have been running across the country, so that people desist from crossing flooded rivers.

“We are prepared for any disaster that will come as a result of these rains. The CPU is on high alert, and they give real time updates. The only disaster we have had so far is that of Insiza in this province, where a reckless driver led to the death of nine people. We are happy with the rains, but we need to be vigilant and avoid unnecessary losses,” he said.

The persistent rains have already caused significant damage across Matabeleland South Province, with nine people having lost their lives after an overzealous passenger is said to have taken control of the vehicle and tried to cross the flooded Tshangamutope River in Mukula area of Insiza and missed the bridge, plunging the vehicle into the river.
