Government impressed by NECs compliance levels

Government has been impressed by the level of compliance to the Labour Amendment Act by National Employment Councils (NECs).

In May this year, government revealed that only 20 National Employment Councils (NECs) out of 48 were compliant with the Labour Amendment Act of 2023.

It, however, emerged this Tuesday that over 90 per cent of NECs are now compliant with the labour law, which is expected to restore sanity and stability to the labour market.

This was revealed on the sidelines of the 9th Annual General Symposium for the General Secretaries and Designated Agents for the National Employment Council in Victoria Falls where capacitation of NECs to meet current and future challenges is at centre stage.

“Right now, I can confirm that most of the NECs have complied; we now have 98,99 compliance, and maybe only one or two have not complied. Right now, I’m impressed to inform you that most of the NECs have complied with the regulatory framework of proportional representation, and they have sent their constitution for registration,” said Ministry of Labour and Social Services Director Labour Administration, Mr Clemence Vusani.

The National Employment Councils Coordinating Committee (NECCC) indicated that it will continue to capacitate its members to ensure a robust labour market that contributes significantly to the country’s economic growth.

“This is a very good achievement to ensure that there is stability and harmony in the industry. The statistics are encouraging; just a few have not complied, and we are having discussions with them to ensure that they comply with the regulations as it is important to feed into the national statistics,” noted NEC Coordinating Committee Chairperson, Mr Nomore Nhema.

Last year, Zimbabwe amended the Labour Act to transform NECs into legal entities and ensure the labour force propels the country to an upper-middle-income society by 2030.
