IT was action galore at the weekend which was headlined by the FUTSAL regional tournament at the Mbare Netball Complex.
The five aside football tournament took centre stage at the weekend where it was the star attraction in Mbare as the Northern and Southern region junior leagues got the ball rolling.
Harare’s select side took advantage of home soil with a 5-2 win over Matabeleland.
Their senior team went a step further as they ruthlessly vanquished the Southern region 10-nil.
Still in football, five teams had an opportunity to test their preparedness ahead of the Northern Region Women’s Football League season which kicks off later this month.
Dynamos, Sunshine, Ngezi, UZ, and Cyclone Queens took part in the preseason tournament.
Ngezi Queens won the preseason tournament after edging Cyclone Queens one-nil in the final.
The league welcomed UZ Queens after ZRP Harare were promoted to the Women’s Premier Soccer League.
In athletics, over six hundred athletes were vying for the five slots to the World Junior Athletes Championship slated for Peru this year.
The athletes battled for honours at the Baldmin Gift Chigwere Athletics junior championships held at the National Sports Stadium.
The annual event is one of the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) junior events which is used as a preparatory tournament for the international stage.
Meanwhile, new champions were crowned in the CBZ National Chess championship Open and Ladies section which came to an exciting end in Harare on Saturday.
Emerald Mushore dominated the Open Section, securing first place with an impressive 9 points out of a possible 11 while Roy Mwadzura and Vitalis Mapuranga were tied on second before Mapuranga claimed the silver medal due to a better tiebreaker.
In the Ladies Section, Christine Makwena displayed exceptional skill and determination, earning the top spot with 6.5 points out of 10.
Colleta Wakuruwarewa secured the silver medal with 6 points, narrowly edging out Kudzanayi Charinda, who got the bronze medal.
