TVBRICS – On Saturday, 8 July, the delegation of BRICS Global Media Tour. Russian Edition visited the GITR Film & Television school. BRICS and African media representatives were given a tour of the university.
“The most important thing when you enter the profession is that you should already understand how the industry works. And our task at the institute is to make sure that students do not have such a gap between their education and the practical mastery of their profession, which is already a job. We want them to speak the same language as professionals when they come in. In the past, journalists were trained for newspapers, now the focus is on media, on multimedia content, on the fact that you cannot only write – you have to do everything, from the idea to post-production. That is why there is now a great deal of emphasis on practice and practice-oriented universities,” explained Aleksandra Rassadina, Vice Rector of GITR.
A distinctive feature of training at the GITR Film & Television school is the focus on practice. Yuri Litovchin, rector of the university and a member of the European Film Academy, explained the advantages of this approach and how students enter the profession upon graduation: “The students receive a huge portfolio so that they can go into any project and show what they are capable of. That’s probably the most important thing, apart from knowledge, skills and abilities.”
He also explained how meetings in an international format, where media representatives from other countries come and students can ask the journalists questions and talk to them, can help the learning process.
“It seems like our planet is big, but in reality it is very small. Today we were visited by media representatives from BRICS countries, that’s almost half the world’s population. This is an amazing opportunity to see the masters of the pen, as they used to say, and now the masters of modern media, talk live and ask questions. I think it broadens the horizons and allows our students to feel more confident in the global media world,” said Litovchin.
The media tour delegates also took part in a panel discussion on “Modern challenges in journalism”, an expert session on modern challenges in media and journalism in Russia and the world, which looked at the challenges in getting a media education.
Zhang Tianxiang, CEO of China.com, shared his impressions of the event.
“I really enjoyed the session, it was well organised. I was interested in the format, I also liked the presentations because all your professors, the speakers are great experts. I am glad that I was able to communicate with Russian young people and to see how young people in Russia react to challenges,” he said.
Zhang Tianxiang also praised the practice-oriented approach to training Russian professionals: “It’s very cool, because in this way professionals who are now studying can more quickly apply their knowledge and skills and find a job.
The media tour is organized by BRICS-Media Association in cooperation with TV BRICS, with a grant provided by the suport of Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund.
