Floods destroy bridges, cut off Mberengwa communities

Story by Courage Bushe

INCESSANT rains have caused widespread destruction in Mberengwa District, damaging critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges and homesteads.

Villagers have been cut off from Zvishavane after floods swept away at least 10 bridges and culverts across the district, disrupting transport and access to essential services.

Mberengwa District Development Coordinator, Mr Vafios Hlabati, confirmed the incidents, citing Jeka Bridge, Chamawanga Bridge, Keyara Bridge and Biri Bridge among the structures destroyed.

He added that the heavy rains have also devastated crops in fields and gardens located along riverbanks, raising concerns over food security in the affected communities.

Authorities say a comprehensive assessment is currently underway to determine the full extent of the damage and to guide response efforts.
