ZIMBABWEAN livestock farmers are expressing renewed hope and confidence in the wake of last year’s El Nino-induced drought, citing government support as a key factor in their recovery and resilience.
Gathered at the 65th edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF), which kicked off in Bulawayo this Monday, farmers showcased a wide range of livestock breeds and innovations aimed at strengthening the country’s livestock sector.
The ZITF continues to be a vital platform for farmers, offering exposure, networking opportunities, and a space to celebrate progress.
This year, farmers were particularly vocal about the positive impact of government initiatives in helping them transition from subsistence to commercial farming.
“As farmers, we are moving away from subsistence farming to business farming so that we can get returns as fast as possible,” a farmer said.
“Everything we are doing is part of government programmes so that together we can improve the livestock economy,” another farmer noted.
Goat and sheep farmers are also part of the trade fair, showcasing excellence in their field.
“I breed sheep and as a youth, I appreciate the support we are getting from the government in terms of feed during dry seasons, including machinery to prepare silage.”
In the wake of the El Nino-induced drought last year and the recurrence of Theileriosis popularly known as January Disease, the government came up with various interventions that include the launch of Livestock Drought Mitigation Centres and the Presidential Tick-Grease Programme, which farmers believe were game changers.
