VILLAGE tourism is emerging as a powerful tool for community empowerment, complementing the global attraction of Victoria Falls by bringing visitors closer to the cultural heritage of the surrounding villages.
In Monde Village, near Victoria Falls, The Kraal Arena offers a unique cultural experience where tourists actively engage with local traditions.
The open-air venue, which can accommodate up to 500 people, serves as a stage for showcasing traditional celebrations, entertainment, and rituals.
“We aim to showcase the traditional celebrations, entertainment, and even mourning rituals of our ancestors. Traditional dances such as Shangani and Makishi will be performed here. We are enhancing the tourist experience in Victoria Falls, encouraging extended stays within the country,” the Director for The Kraal Arena, Luke Ngwenya said.
True to the adage, “taking tourism revenue to the custodians of the land,” the surrounding communities are reaping the benefits of the recently launched arena.
“We have local dance groups, largely comprising of individuals under 30 performing here. This provides valuable employment and income. Additionally, villagers will be employed on-site, contributing to the overall well-being of the community,” Ngwenya said
This surge in village tourism transcends mere cultural exchange and acts as a robust catalyst for sustainable development.
The generated revenue directly supports these communities, bolstering essential services like education and healthcare.
