Corrective surgery changing lives of children

Story by Grace Sibanda

CORRECTIVE surgery for children with deformed limbs is set to be a life-changing process for the young ones as the medical fraternity embraces new technologies.

Technological advancements in the medical fraternity have seen children who thought they could never walk again rethinking their odds after receiving corrective surgery at Cure Children’s Hospital in Bulawayo.

Parents and patients who spoke to this news crew are excited about the technologies that are changing the lives of their children.

“I have carried my son all his life thinking there can never be any help for him, now I have hope that his legs will once again move,” said a parent.

Another parent expressed, “Before this technology came I thought our family was bewitched, but seeing the change in my child`s condition since we began on surgery and that of other children who have been here, I have hope my child will walk again.”

“Although it is a process, I am happy that I will walk again one day because of the corrective surgery I am receiving,” said a patient.

Cure Children’s Hospital executive director, John Simpson says the hospital’s focus is on reshaping the future of children with disabilities.

“Our focus has been on reshaping the lives of the children who come through our doors to ensure that they have a new lease at life, because most of our patients are people who thought nothing could ever be done to change their lives, but with technology, their conditions can be corrected,” said Simpson.

The life-changing surgeries have already benefitted children from Bulawayo, Chinhoyi, Mhondoro and Masvingo, among other areas.
