VARIOUS churches marked Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, which sets the stage for the Holy Week and the journey to Easter, reflecting on the events leading up to his crucifixion.
Christians from various denominations celebrated Palm Sunday with processions and prayers, waving palm branches and singing victory songs to commemorate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
“We take this day seriously as it marks the renewal of our faith,” one Christian said.
“I always look forward to this day as a Christian because it gives me time to reflect on the choices that I make as a believer,” another added.
“The day means a lot because it reminds us of the journey that Jesus Christ walked when he sacrificed his life for ours.”
Clergy from the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe and the Anglican Church highlighted the importance of Palm Sunday, stressing Jesus’ sacrifice and journey to the cross, a crucial moment in the Christian faith.
“For us, Palm Sunday is a day we remember Jesus Christ our King’s last days on earth especially how things unfolded when he entered into Jerusalem before his Crucifixion,” Methodist in Zimbabwe Church Mbare Circuit, Reverand Lonely Panavanhu said.
“This day is important, as you can see Christians waving palm branches the same way the crowds greeted Jesus when he entered Jerusalem by waving palm branches and covering his path with palm branches,” he added.
“For us as Christians, Palm Sunday is a day we begin preparing for Easter where the death and resurrection of our Lord took place. It is also a time where we reflect on his life during his time on Earth, taking into consideration his love and kindness to humanity as we also yearn to live like him,” Dean Anglican Cathedral, Reverand Jonah Mudowaya said.
Palm Sunday is celebrated on the last Sunday before Easter and is recognised by Christians as they mark the beginning of the journey to the cross where Jesus Christ was crucified.
