CAPS United supporters are beginning to believe a title challenge is within reach after the Harare giants secured a statement 2-1 victory over Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium, ending an 11-year winless run at the venue.
The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League triumph on April 26 not only underlined Makepekepe’s growing credentials but also strengthened their position at the top of the table.
For a club that spent much of last season battling relegation, the transformation has been remarkable. CAPS United now appear to have rediscovered the consistency and fighting spirit that once made them one of Zimbabwean football’s dominant forces.
After a cautious start, the contest developed into an enthralling encounter, with the Green Machine showing resilience and composure to claim all three points in front of Highlanders’ home support.
The result has reignited optimism among the CAPS United faithful, many of whom are beginning to envision a return to the club’s glory days.
“It was a good game, seeing we had gone for a long time without beating Highlanders,” said one supporter.
“Getting three points against Highlanders shows that our boys are thirsty for success. We just hope this will be our year,” added another.
A third fan praised the club’s leadership, saying: “Last season was a difficult one, but we credit the executive for effective planning and for supporting the team. These are the signs of a happy squad.”
Under head coach Takesure Chiragwi and assistant coach Ian Bakala, CAPS United have emerged as genuine contenders. The duo, both members of the club’s 2004 championship-winning side, have successfully rebuilt a team that looked destined for trouble just a season ago.
Their stewardship has helped the Green Machine open a four-point lead at the summit, while also restoring belief throughout the club.
Despite the growing excitement, Chiragwi remains grounded.
“It is a work in progress. Since the time I have been at CAPS United, we have been building. What is special is that as we build, results are coming, which is a plus for us. The boys are adapting to our playing style, and we hope to take each game as it comes. This was a sweet three points for us. History is made and broken, but we do not rely much on those statistics,” he said.
CAPS United have not only been winning matches but also finding the back of the net with regularity, scoring 12 goals in their opening nine league fixtures.
With momentum building and confidence soaring, Makepekepe are beginning to look every bit like genuine title contenders.
