A 61-year-old man from Bulawayo has been slapped with a 20-year jail term after being found guilty of sexually abusing his mentally challenged stepdaughter.
The state managed to prove that in November last year, the man raped his 24-year-old who is mentally incompetent stepdaughter who is legally incapable of giving consent.
The court heard that the incident occurred at the family home in Bulawayo where the convict raped the complainant while she was sleeping.
Meanwhile, in another case, Nathan Phiri of Bulawayo has been sentenced to five years in prison for attempted murder.
According to the court, in October last year, Phiri attempted to kill his friend, Mkhanyisi Ndlovu with an axe after an altercation over a cell phone.
The dispute occurred after the complainant visited the accused’s residence to get his cell phone, which the accused had borrowed earlier when both parties had been drinking beer before the incident.
The complainant sustained severe injuries to the head and face and was hospitalised for treatment.
