BEITBRIDGE -A 38-year-old man from Beitbridge has been sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder and malicious damage to property, following a violent attack on his former girlfriend.
The court heard that the man forcibly entered the woman’s home after she refused to let him in.
In a fit of rage, he threw stones through her window before breaking in and dragging her outside.
He proceeded to stab her once in the stomach and once in the thigh leaving her seriously injured.
The victim was rushed to hospital, where she received emergency medical treatment and later recovered.
The accused was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.
However, one year was suspended on condition of good behaviour, resulting in an effective four-year custodial sentence.
For malicious damage to property, he was handed a three-month sentence, which was wholly suspended.
Magistrates noted the gravity of the offence, particularly its violent and premeditated nature, and said the sentence should serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.
