The girl child continues to be a target of child sexual exploitation amid revelations that at least seven new cases are being heard each day at the Harare Magistrate’s Court.
The safety of the girl child has become a social concern with at least seven rape cases being heard at the Harare Magistrate’s Court daily.
The cases include that of 24-year-old Noel Nyakurukutu who allegedly attacked and raped a teenage girl in a bushy area in Harare’s Budiriro suburb.
In another case, 22-year-old Joseph Cheusi appeared in court after allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl who had asked him for directions.
Elsewhere, 41-year-old Vusa Dzimwasha is accused of raping a teenage girl on several occasions.
It is alleged that the accused would take the girl to his house when she was going to school or on her way back home.
This comes at a time when there are moves to come up with a mandatory sentence of 15 years and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for those convicted of rape.
