Amputee footballers steal show at Walk for Life launch

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

Amputee footballers stole the limelight at the Walk for Life launch after a polished display at the National Sports Stadium in Harare this Friday.

The Walk for Life initiative has been launched in the capital to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

A delegation that included diplomats, leaders of national sports associations, athletes and students walked from Belvedere to the National Sports Stadium.

Once the walk was done, it was time for some physical displays and the highlight of the day was a showcase by amputee footballers.

“We are happy to be being given opportunities to showcase our talents to the nation. We have grown as a federation and we aim to have a running league parallel to the Premier Soccer League for the able-bodied,” said Zimbabwe Amputee Football Federation president, Robson Masarafu.

Guest of Honour at the event, the Deputy Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Honourable Emily Jesaya also showcased her skipping rope skills before challenging the country to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

“Because of the life that we are living, we do not have enough time to exercise, but we can adopt a healthy lifestyle by the way we eat, and we can walk more, it is healthy to walk. And that can increase our life expectancy as a country, a healthy country produces healthy athletes,” said Honourable Jesaya.

The event is expected to be turned into an annual sports programme.
