Algeria -Zim focus on hydrocarbon and oil sectors

Story by Theophilus Chuma

THE Government has outlined plans to further explore the hydrocarbon and oil sectors by utilising expertise from experienced nations like Algeria.

A meeting between the Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Honourable Winston Chitando and the visiting Algerian Energy and Mining Minister, Mr Mohamed Arkab in Harare this Monday has pointed to possibilities of Zimbabwe heightening focus on oil and hydrocarbon exploration.

Algeria reaffirmed its interest to support the country after a similar meeting held with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House this Tuesday.

“We are fully committed to assisting Zimbabwe in these key areas of focus and we stand ready to bring the expertise to ensure that we fully support these areas,” said Minister Arkab.

Minister Chitando spoke on how support from the North African country will further catapult the potential of this sector.

“Algeria has the potential and expertise which we can utilise as Zimbabwe. We, therefore, look forward to partnering with them in the areas of oil exploration and also hydrocarbons.”

Zimbabwe has already embarked on key hydrocarbon projects, with the Muchesu Coal Mine in Binga cited as one of the production vehicles in the mining sector.
