AFCON 2025 where youthful brilliance meets ageless grit on the football stage

Story by Lawrence Trusida

AS the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco on December 22, Zimbabwe will field the youngest player at the tournament, 16-year-old Tadiwanashe Chakuchichi, while neighbours Mozambique have the oldest, 42-year-old Elias ‘Domingues’ Pelembe, brining to the fore a striking generational contrast at this year’s finals.

Chakuchichi steps onto Africa’s biggest football stage carrying the hopes of a nation eager to turn promise into progress.

The teenager has already shown his capabilities and qualities and has already captained the national Under 15 and Under 17 sides.

The youngster played eight matches for Premier Soccer League champions Scottland, scoring three goals.
Across the border, Mozambique offer a powerful counterpoint.

A veteran of many battles, who spent 16 years in the South African premiership, Pelembe brings experience forged over decades, where reading the game matters as much as running it.

His presence in the Mambas’ squad is a reminder that leadership, composure and wisdom remain priceless commodities at the highest level.

Between Chakuchichi and Pelembe lies a 26-year age gap, yet the Africa Cup of Nations makes them equals. They will stand for the same anthem, chase the same dream and compete on the same pitch.

As the tournament kicks off, AFCON once again proves that football belongs to every generation.

From Zimbabwe’s youthful promise to Mozambique’s seasoned resolve, the beautiful game continues to tell stories that stretch far beyond ninety minutes.
