By day, Ziko’s dusty roads bustle with life. Children weave through narrow paths, vendors call out to customers and neighbours gather to exchange greetings.
Today, however, something has changed.
The streets are quieter. Gates close earlier. Conversations drop to whispers whenever the tragedy is mentioned. Residents glance over their shoulders before stepping into the darkness.
A cloud of fear and grief has settled over the Ziko community in Seke after two young people were found dead in separate locations following a chilling Monday night incident that has left families searching for answers and a community struggling to sleep.
The mystery began when 26-year-old Takudzwa Gumunyu failed to return home.
Like countless young Zimbabweans, he had gone to work as usual. His family expected him back by evening.
He never arrived.
As dawn broke, rumours began circulating that a body had been discovered in nearby bushland.
His mother, Mrs Tarisai Gumunyu, recalled the agonising moments that followed.
“He went to work as usual, and we expected him back around 7pm. However, until early morning, we noticed he was not available. We heard rumours that there was a dead body in the bush.
“Then when we went there, the police was already there, and they were still identifying the person, so they told us to be still while they confirm. Later, the body was confirmed that it was him. He had several wounds behind his head and a deep cut behind his ear.”
Outside the family home, sorrow hangs heavily in the air as relatives, friends and neighbours attempt to comprehend the loss of a young man they describe as hardworking and full of promise.
Yet the nightmare was only beginning.
Elsewhere in Ziko on Tuesday morning, another victim was discovered alive.
Lying in the grass, barely able to walk or speak, she was found by resident Mr Tinashe Matanda, whose quick action helped reunite her with her family before she was taken for medical treatment.
“I found her in the morning, lying in the grass, struggling to walk as well talking. I then took her home and shared the information with various neighbours, and we came up with little earnings to take her to the hospital,” he said.
The survivor, Ms Bridget Dzingirai remembers only fragments of what happened.
“I was walking from around 9PM alone. Then, when I was near a tuckshop, I saw a man behind me, and later he disappeared. I noticed another man in front, and he disappeared in a few minutes. I was unconscious from there. I do not know what happened. I only have cuts and pain in my left hand,” she said.
As residents tried to process the shocking developments, another devastating discovery sent fresh waves of grief through the community.
The body of 21-year-old Panashe, a hairdresser, was found lying in the grass after residents clearing vegetation near their homes stumbled upon her remains.
According to reports, she had been walking home from work on Monday night when the incident occurred.
The grim discovery deepened fears that something sinister had unfolded under the cover of darkness.
Two lives had been lost.
Two others had survived.
Among the survivors is Mr Isaac Nenyai, who remains under medical care receiving treatment for head injuries sustained during the attack.
His account adds another unsettling piece to an increasingly disturbing puzzle.
“I was going home late at night, holding a few groceries in my hand. I passed by a person. I think it was a giant lady in a long coat with her hands in her pockets, looking down with a hat on her head. From there, I was hit in the head and the back, then I was unconscious and later in the morning found myself in the bush, then I walked a few steps and fainted,” he said.
Police attended the scenes and conveyed the bodies for post-mortem examinations as investigations continue.
For now, answers remain elusive.
What is certain is that a community once defined by its everyday rhythms is now united by grief and uncertainty.
Residents say fear has taken hold, with many reluctant to walk alone after dark as speculation grows over what transpired on that tragic night.
Behind the police investigations and unanswered questions are families mourning loved ones whose journeys ended abruptly, and survivors beginning the long road to recovery.
As the search for answers continues, Ziko waits; grieving, fearful and hoping that the mystery behind one of its darkest nights will soon be solved.
