GRASSROOTS sports development continues to gain momentum across the country, with Government urging sporting clubs to use their platforms to combat drug and substance abuse among athletes and young people.
Central Region Soccer League Division One side Dulivhadzimu United has ushered in a new five-member executive committee following its annual general meeting held in Beitbridge this weekend.
Chris Kaurimbo was elected chairperson, deputised by Ashwin Mucheri, while Mandla Moyo takes over as Secretary-General, with Nqaba Mhlanga as his deputy. Terrence Michael was elected as the club’s new treasurer.
Kaurimbo said the new leadership is committed to using sport as a tool to empower young people and promote positive lifestyles.
“This time, we are trying by all means to empower youths through sporting activities. As the new executive, we are raring to go and take this team to greater heights. This will also help us keep young people engaged and away from drugs,” he said.
Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Albert Nguluvhe, challenged the club to become ambassadors in the fight against drug and substance abuse.
“As Government, we remain committed to creating an environment where sport can flourish by supporting grassroots development, improving sporting infrastructure and encouraging partnerships between Government, local authorities, the private sector and sporting organisations. I therefore challenge Dulivhadzimu United to become ambassadors in the fight against drug and substance abuse,” he said.
Government continues to support sports development through infrastructure investment and policies aimed at identifying and nurturing talent, particularly among young people in remote areas.
