Government accelerates housing programme

THE government’s drive to reduce Zimbabwe’s housing backlog has gathered momentum, with the development of more than 250 medium-density residential stands at Sunway City underway as authorities pursue a target of delivering one million housing units by 2030.

The housing project forms part of the National Development Strategy Two (NDS2) and supports the government’s human settlements policy aimed at expanding access to affordable housing.

National Housing and Social Amenities Minister, Professor Paul Mavhima toured the Special Economic Zone on a familiarisation visit this Thursday and said government is employing multiple strategies to accelerate housing delivery and infrastructure development.

“We have set a target of delivering one million units by 2030 and this is just an example of the different projects we are having. We have different approaches that include public-private partnerships.”

Sunway City Pvt Ltd Acting Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Valentine Zvomuya said the development will ultimately provide more than 800 residential stands through a phased approach.

“We are developing high and medium density residential stands. We are a Special Economic Zone anchoring the industrialisation of Zimbabwe. At this site, we have several industrial parks, commercial parks and high-tech parks and recreational parks that we are developing. We are complementing government’s efforts in reducing the housing backlog through development of more than 800 stands at this site.”

Sunway City is one of Zimbabwe’s Special Economic Zones and forms part of the Smart City Urban Development Project, integrating residential, commercial and industrial infrastructure.

The development has attracted both local and foreign investment as efforts to expand housing delivery continue.
