THE Government has intensified efforts to facilitate the safe and dignified return of Zimbabwean nationals currently gathered at various centres in South Africa following recent developments in that country.
The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, through the Department of Civil Protection, is coordinating a broad-based humanitarian response in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
Authorities are engaging private sector players, humanitarian agencies, development partners, non-governmental organisations and church groups to mobilise resources required for the repatriation exercise.
Support being assembled includes food assistance, temporary accommodation and transport services to move affected citizens from South Africa to designated reception centres in Zimbabwe.
Government said resources are also being drawn from the Emergency Fund to strengthen the humanitarian operation as part of ongoing disaster management interventions.
More than five organisations have already been engaged in support of the initiative, with authorities expressing appreciation for the assistance being provided by various stakeholders.
Relevant government departments have been activated at border posts and within local communities to receive returnees and facilitate their reintegration.
Officials said the operation requires a coordinated whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to ensure an effective response.
Government also commended organisations and individuals who continue to support national humanitarian and emergency response programmes.
