FORMER President of the Pan-African Parliament, Chief Fortune Charumbira, has been honoured with the African Royal Award in recognition of his leadership and contribution to strengthening governance institutions across the continent.

The award, presented during a Special Royal Summit hosted by the Institute of African Royalty in partnership with the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa, acknowledges individuals whose achievements have had a significant impact on Africa and who exemplify integrity, unity and visionary leadership.

The honour reflects growing continental recognition of Chief Charumbira’s role in advancing African governance and elevating the place of traditional leadership within the continent’s institutional framework.

Speaking after receiving the award, Chief Charumbira said the recognition reinforced the need for continued commitment to Africa’s development and called on young people to take an active role in shaping the continent’s future.

“As PAP president, as a chief and as a member of the National Council of Chiefs, I did my best. It is all about the capacity to manage an institution. Africa is a youthful continent, with more than 60 percent of its population being young people. We have a responsibility to prepare the continent for the future, and youths must take it upon themselves to ensure these goals are implemented,” he said.

The accolade adds to Chief Charumbira’s growing list of honours and underscores his contribution to promoting inclusive governance, strengthening African institutions and advancing continental development objectives.

His recognition comes as traditional leaders across Africa continue to play an increasingly important role in governance, community development and the preservation of cultural values, complementing broader efforts to foster unity and sustainable progress across the continent.
