GOVERNMENT is intensifying efforts to empower girls in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), as Zimbabwe positions young women at the centre of the country’s digital transformation and innovation agenda.

Hundreds of female students gathered at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo this Friday for the belated International Girls in ICT commemorations, where learners showcased technological innovations, digital projects and award-winning ICT essays.

The event highlighted growing momentum to increase female participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with Government emphasising the importance of nurturing the next generation of scientists, engineers and digital entrepreneurs.

Through various innovations and presentations, the girls demonstrated their growing confidence and capability in the technology sector.

“I did not expect to win. I am so excited to have been chosen among thousands of learners. This shows that even girls can excel in STEM subjects,” a pupil said.

“This shows that we are capable of excelling in male-dominated spaces,” another female pupil said.

“I want to thank the Government for honouring young innovators like us,” another pupil said.

Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Honourable Tatenda Mavetera, said Government initiatives are creating pathways for girls to actively participate in Zimbabwe’s digital economy.

“Through these initiatives, we are building pathways for the next generation of female scientists and engineers. We are empowering our girls to play an important role in digital transformation.”

Dr Mavetera also highlighted the impact of the SHE Tech initiative championed by the First Lady, Dr Auxilia Mnangagwa, describing it as a key platform for empowering girls through mentorship, digital skills and innovation.

“The SHE TECH initiative championed by the First Lady, Dr Auxilia Mnangagwa, is proving to be a game changer in ensuring no girl child is left behind in digital transformation,” she said.

The commemorations come amid the rollout of Zimbabwe’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which places young people, particularly girls, at the centre of the country’s technology-driven development agenda.

Government says empowering girls in ICT remains critical to building an inclusive digital economy and accelerating national development under Vision 2030.
