Bulawayo derby in doubt as Highlanders players strike over payment dispute

HIGHLANDERS’ preparations for a crucial Bulawayo derby against Chicken Inn have been thrown into disarray after players went on strike, demanding payment of outstanding dues.

The city rivals are scheduled to meet at Barbourfields Stadium this Wednesday, with Highlanders seeking their first maximum points after seven rounds of fixtures. However, the team failed to hold its final training session as players downed tools, citing unpaid salaries and allowances.

The latest developments deepen a growing crisis at the club, amid renewed allegations of financial mismanagement.

Earlier this season, Highlanders’ pre-season camp in Botswana was overshadowed by claims of mishandled funds, which led to the suspension of Chief Executive Officer Mr Denzil Mkandla. The suspension was later lifted, drawing criticism over procedural inconsistencies within the club’s leadership.

Despite recent financial backing from businessman Mr Wicknell Chivayo, the situation appears unresolved, with players now taking industrial action at a critical stage of the campaign.

Highlanders have long grappled with financial instability, with previous audit reports flagging adverse findings that point to systemic governance challenges.

With preparations disrupted ahead of one of Bulawayo’s biggest fixtures, uncertainty now surrounds whether the match will proceed as planned and how the turmoil will affect Bosso’s bid to revive their season.
