THE body of National Hero Major General Retired Herbert Chingono has returned to Harare after being taken to his rural home in Nyazura, where the people of Manicaland Province gathered to pay their last respects.
The late hero’s body will lie in state at Charles Gumbo Barracks before being taken to his farm in Mazowe on Friday morning. Friends and relatives in Nyazura had earlier honoured him with a final farewell.
The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage gave an update on the programme leading to Monday’s burial proceedings. Major General Retired Chingono, at the Charles Gumbo Barracks, where he will lie in state.
“His body will be taken to his farm in Mazowe tomorrow and return to Harare the same day at 1.pm. On Saturday, the body will lie in state at his residence in Greystone Park and on Sunday, it will lie in state ahead of burial on Monday,” Director Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Ms Brenda Mamvura said.
The national hero died at the age of 68 on March 15 at his Pentland Farm in Mazowe after a short illness.
He is survived by his wife, Loyse Chingono and six children.
The late Major General (Retired) Chingono, together with two other national heroes, will be laid to rest this Monday at the National Heroes Acre.
