Nationwide schools tournament signals new phase for Zimbabwe junior football

A nationwide schools football tournament has been launched in Zimbabwe, marking a significant expansion of grassroots development structures aimed at identifying and nurturing young talent.

What began as a community-based initiative in Chitungwiza, designed to steer youths away from drug and substance abuse, has evolved into a fully-fledged national competition. The programme has progressed from local to provincial level and now operates countrywide, offering structured competition for both boys and girls.

The tournament is organised by the Tanny Mashamhanda Foundation in partnership with Young and Great, with a focus on early talent identification and holistic development through sport.

Young and Great partner Mr Tanaka Mashamhanda described the initiative as a long-term intervention in Zimbabwe’s football ecosystem.

“This tournament represents a long-term investment in grassroots football. Identifying and supporting talent at the school level is fundamental to building a strong and sustainable future for the game in Zimbabwe,” he said.

Schools have welcomed the competition, citing the importance of structured sporting platforms in improving standards and providing constructive engagement for learners.

The National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH) Head in Charge of Football, Mr Masimba Mupawaenda, said the tournament would enhance coordination in talent development.

“As schools, we welcome this platform because it provides learners with structured competition and exposure. It will raise standards and enable us to develop talent in a coordinated and professional manner. We are facing challenges related to drug and substance abuse, and this initiative offers young people a positive focus,” he said.

Provincial finals are scheduled for June, with winning teams progressing to national finals in September.

The tournament’s nationwide rollout aligns with broader efforts by the Zimbabwe Football Association to strengthen junior development structures and create sustainable pathways into elite football.
