BULAWAYO’s Pumula North suburb is in mourning following the drowning of two 11-year-old girls who were swimming with friends in a disused pit on Sunday afternoon.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident, which occurred at a water-filled pit in the suburb.
ZRP Press and Public Relations Officer for Bulawayo Province, Inspector Msebele Nomalanga, said police received a report of sudden death by drowning.
“Police in Bulawayo confirm receiving a report of sudden death by drowning in which two female juveniles drowned in a disused pit,” said Inspector Nomalanga.
She said the incident occurred at around 3pm on February 8, 2026, when the two minors were swimming with other children at the pit.
“At around 1530 hours, a 15-year-old juvenile who was swimming at a nearby pit responded to cries from other juveniles who reported that the two girls were no longer able to come out of the pit,” she said.
“The 15-year-old juvenile and his friend rushed to the scene, managed to retrieve the bodies and subsequently made a report to the police.”
Inspector Nomalanga urged parents and guardians to closely monitor children under their care and discourage them from playing near water bodies and disused pits.
“We urge parents and guardians to always monitor children under their care and warn them against playing near water bodies and deep pits to avoid loss of life,” she said.
She also called on communities to play a proactive role in preventing similar incidents.
“Communities must take collective responsibility by stopping children they see swimming in these dangerous water bodies. We also warn members of the public not to cross flooded streams and rivers, especially as more rains are expected,” Inspector Nomalanga added.
