LONDON and Victoria Falls Stock Exchange-listed Kavango Resources has invested US$20 million in a gold processing plant at its Filabusi mine, signalling a shift from exploration to full-scale mining and processing operations.
The investment aligns with the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which seeks to transform Zimbabwe’s mining sector from a largely extractive industry into a driver of industrialisation, value addition, and broader economic growth.
Kavango Resources is leveraging the proven potential of the gold-rich Filabusi belt to boost production, create employment, and promote sustainable mining practices. Equipment for the modern processing plant is already on site, with commissioning expected by March.
“We are now transforming ourselves from just being an exploration entity to a mining and processing company. We have procured modern processing equipment, and we think by March we will be commissioning the plant. Our aim is to transform this area and create employment for the community and already we are already employing 160 people,” Chairperson Kavango Holdings Zimbabwe Ltd Thamsanqa Mpofu said.
The mining giant has also embarked on an ambitious project that has formalised 42 small-scale miners’ groups for sustainable mining.
“Since the coming of this company here, we have formalised, now we are more focused on safety and sustainable mining than profit, and this has transformed this area,” small-scale miner Abraham Mpanduki said.
The local leadership that toured the mining giant this Wednesday was impressed by the commitment of the company to the transformation of Filabusi.
“We are impressed by what you have done, the investment in our community, and our wish is that when you employ, please consider the locals, and we feel you are following the President’s mantra of development, and with entities like this, we will achieve the 2030 vision,” Insiza North Legislator Honourable Delani Moyo said.
“Your coming here has changed a lot. Continue teaching our people sustainable mining so that we catch up with other developed districts,” Chief Sebasa said.
As the nation implements NDS2, Matabeleland South province remains one of the biggest gold producers in the country, with reports indicating that the province contributes 40 % of the gold delivered to Fidelity annually.
