BULAWAYO Chiefs Football Club has launched a grassroots football development programme at Cyrene Mission in Matabeleland South, in a strategic move aimed at identifying, nurturing and developing young football talent from school level.

The initiative, established through a partnership between the Premier Soccer League side and the historic institution, is designed to create a structured pathway from school football to the professional game, offering learners increased exposure and technical support.

For many learners, the programme represents a rare opportunity to turn potential into tangible career prospects.

“I have been given an opportunity to play and be seen by Bulawayo Chiefs, and I want to prove my talent. This is very important for me as it gives me a chance to showcase my skills at a higher level. My dream is to play for Bulawayo Chiefs and represent the nation one day,” said one of the participating youths.

Under the arrangement, Bulawayo Chiefs’ first-team coaches will provide technical support to the school, while Under-13 and Under-15 teams will be established to create a structured development pipeline feeding directly into the Premier Soccer League club.

Cyrene Mission alumnus, Bhekuzulu Khumalo, said the initiative aligns with long-standing aspirations to see local talent reach elite levels of the game.

“Our dream is to see these youngsters not only making it into Bulawayo Chiefs but also going on to play at national and international level,” he said.

Cyrene Mission Sports Director, Velaphi Sibindi, described the partnership as timely and transformative.

“This memorandum of understanding is very important to us. It is also in line with government’s Education 5.0 thrust, which recognises sport as a viable career path alongside academic development,” Sibindi said.

Bulawayo Chiefs representative, Dumisani Sibanda, said the club is committed to moulding the young players into professionals.

“We are here with a clear mandate to turn these boys into professional footballers. As Bulawayo Chiefs, we are proud to play such a significant role in developing grassroots talent,” he said.

Grassroots football remains a critical breeding ground for future stars, with many global legends having emerged from school and community-based programmes.

In Zimbabwe, Government continues to promote sport as an integral part of holistic education, ensuring that young learners are afforded opportunities to excel both academically and through sport-driven career development.
