GOVERNMENT has reiterated its commitment to infrastructure development in schools, targeting to construct more facilities that accommodate STEM subjects and skills training.
This came out when the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Honourable Torerayi Moyo led a delegation from his ministry to assess schools’ state of preparedness for the first term in Chiredzi District, Masvingo Province this Wednesday
What mostly impressed the Minister was the infrastructure at the schools, especially at Chiredzi Government High, where a recently constructed fully-furnished science block is ready for leaners to utilise.
With government encouraging the uptake of STEM subjects, having proper infrastructure is a step towards ensuring not just relevant, but quality education.
“As I went around in the various schools, I was happy because they were prepared to start the term. Lessons began on the first day of school and teachers had their schemes of work. I am equally impressed by the infrastructure. We are encouraging the uptake of Science subjects and that can only happen if we have the proper infrastructure,” the Minister said.
The schools say they have embraced the Heritage-Based Curriculum as they move to ensure learners are equipped with relevant skills while embracing culture.
“We are ensuring that we equip learners with relevant skills like carpentry and metalwork as well as the uptake of STEM subjects seriously, that is why we constructed a science block,” Chiredzi Government High School Headmaster, Mr Victor Zvada said.
“We have managed to ensure that we develop our infrastructure so that it accommodates all our learners. We have managed to ensure that every child is digitally literate,” Chiredzi Government Primary School’s Headmaster, Mr Super Saiti stated.
Under the National Development Strategy 2, the government targets to continue pursuing infrastructural development and integrating digital skills in learning, hence the Presidential Computerisation Programme will continue with a view to bridging the digital divide between rural and urban learners.
