Back-to-school travel peaks as boarding learners head back to class

BOARDING school learners across Zimbabwe began returning to their schools this Monday, ahead of the official opening of the 2026 first school term on Tuesday, triggering heightened activity at major transport hubs and shopping centres.

In Harare, bus termini and surrounding retail areas recorded increased traffic as parents and guardians escorted learners to long-distance buses, making last-minute arrangements for travel, uniforms and food supplies. The annual back-to-school movement marked the final phase of preparations following the festive break.

Parents expressed optimism as learners resumed classes, saying they were keen to see a smooth start to the academic year.

“We are happy that our children are returning to school with everything in order,” one parent said while accompanying a learner at a city bus terminus.

Learners, particularly those sitting for public examinations this year, said they were motivated to perform well.

“I am ready and I am hoping for good results, especially for A and O Level for our school,” a learner said.

Another added: “I am well prepared and I want to do my best, not just for myself but also for my parents.”

Transport operators said they had put measures in place to ensure learner safety during the busy travel period.

“We are taking extra precautions on the roads and ensuring that children travel safely to their schools,” a bus driver said.

With the 2026 school calendar officially commencing on Tuesday, education stakeholders are expecting normal learning to begin across the country, as boarding schools receive learners and finalise administrative arrangements for the new term.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerai Moyo said all was set for schools’ reopening, with most Form One borders having travelled to their new schools for orientation as they begin a fresh chapter in their education journey.

“We are opening the new term, the first term for 2026, and in terms of preparedness, we are 100 percent ready to kick-start the term,” he said.
