Morocco open AFCON 2025 with composed win over Comoros

HOSTS Morocco made a steady start to their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 campaign, defeating Comoros 2-0 in their opening Group A match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday night.

Backed by a capacity crowd, the Atlas Lions dominated possession from the outset but were forced to remain patient against a well-organised Comoros side that defended with discipline and intent.

Morocco’s early momentum suffered a setback in the 10th minute when Brahim Díaz failed to convert from the penalty spot, a miss that briefly lifted Comoros and unsettled the hosts’ rhythm.

However, Morocco regrouped after the interval, increasing the tempo and pressing higher up the pitch. Their persistence was rewarded in the second half with two well-taken goals that ultimately broke Comoros’ resistance and ensured a controlled opening victory for the tournament hosts.

The result places Morocco in a strong early position in Group A as they continue their quest to secure a first continental title since 1976.

Group A action resumes on Monday when Mali face Zambia at 16:00hrs.

Attention then shifts to Group B, where South Africa take on Angola at 19:00hrs, before Zimbabwe’s Warriors meet seven-time champions Egypt at 22:00hrs in what promises to be one of the group’s most anticipated fixtures.
