THE 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) gets underway tonight in Rabat, with host nation Morocco facing Comoros in the tournament’s opening match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Morocco enter the competition carrying both expectation and momentum. Ranked 11th in the world, the Atlas Lions are seeking to translate their impressive recent form highlighted by a historic semi-final appearance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, into continental success on home soil.
The “Atlas Lions,” meet a resilient Comoros side known as “giant killers,” which topped its qualifying group ahead of Tunisia.
The footballing history between the two nations spans five total meetings, with Morocco remaining undefeated. Their first competitive clashes came during the 2019 AFCON Qualifiers, where Morocco earned a narrow 1-0 home victory before a 2-2 draw in Comoros.
In the group stages of the 2021 AFCON, Morocco secured a 2-0 win. Comoros most recently fell to Morocco 3–1 in the Arab Cup earlier this month.
