THE ongoing rehabilitation of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road is set to inject renewed energy into the tourism sector along one of Zimbabwe’s most important travel corridors.
Works on the highway are progressing steadily, with completion expected before the end of next year.
Beyond the immediate improvements, the upgrade is poised to deliver long-term benefits, particularly for tourism.
Tourism executive Ms Tariro Nhau said the project would significantly improve accessibility.
“The rehabilitation of this route will lead to improved accessibility. A safer and smoother road makes it easier for travellers to move between destinations such as Victoria Falls, Hwange and Bulawayo. Reduced travelling time means budget-conscious visitors can do more activities and spend more time enjoying the country,” she said.
Tourism stakeholders say enhanced accessibility is key to improving overall visitor experience.
“Good roads make any destination attractive. The rehabilitation will certainly draw more visitors to Victoria Falls and other places along the highway. Travellers gain confidence when they know they will spend less time on the road and more time having fun,” tourism executive Ms Memory Mhandu said.
Project overseers say the road carries national significance beyond tourism, serving as a major economic artery. Eight contractors are currently working on various sections of the route.
“We are impressed with the progress because this road facilitates tourism and economic mobility. Accessibility is critical as tourists, goods and services require reliable movement. We appreciate the whole-of-government approach, and as ZINARA we will continue collecting and disbursing funds efficiently to ensure targets and quality are achieved,” said ZINARA Board Chairperson, Dr George Manyaya.
Local leadership has also expressed optimism, noting the road’s strategic importance to national production and distribution networks.
“This is an economic road for Matabeleland North and the entire country. ZESA power and coal come from this province, so this road is the hub of the economy in Zimbabwe,” emphasised Matabeleland North Minister of for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Richard Moyo.
As rehabilitation continues, authorities and tourism players are confident that a modern, reliable Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway will improve traveller experience, unlock new tourism opportunities and strengthen Zimbabwe’s broader economic base.
