THE government has commissioned a new batch of utility vehicles for Gweru City Council as part of ongoing efforts to improve service delivery.

The latest fleet comes just nine months after a previous batch, which included fire tenders supplied by the government and acquired from Belarus under the initiative of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The local authority says it is geared to ensure the City of Progress continues on a development trajectory in line with President Mnangagwa’s “Call To Action, No Compromise To Service Delivery Blueprint”.

“This milestone marks a significant investment in our city’s infrastructure and a testament to our commitment to improving service delivery,” Gweru City Council Mayor, Councillor Martin Chivhoko said.

Government says the Second Republic will continue to capacitate local authorities for the attainment of the smart city concept across the province.

“I applaud Gweru City for embracing the Vision 2030 accelerating call to action model through utilisation of devolution funds. The mobility of council will improve quality and speed up service delivery as we March towards attainment of a prosperous and empowered upper middle-income society earlier than 2030,” the Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube said.

Government has directed local authorities to attain the smart city status, anchored on the upgrading of key infrastructure such as road network, water reticulation and energy generation, among others.
