HARARE – A suspected armed robber has appeared in court in connection with a US$600 000 money heist, which took place in Harare’s central business district a few weeks ago.

Circumstances are that on June 16, Samson Gora allegedly provided critical information to an armed gang regarding the movement and storage of cash at his employer, Mr Rafiq Adam’s offices along Cameroon Street in Harare.

According to court documents, Gora, who is employed as a driver by Mr Adam of Merchantman Enterprises, allegedly conspired with Nyengerayi Chikwadze, Oscar Muchenje and two unidentified foreign nationals who are still at large.

The court heard that the accused persons, posing as prospective clients, stormed the complainant’s office armed with a pistol.

During the encounter, one of the suspects is said to have struck Adam with the butt of the pistol, demanding keys to the company’s safe.

In fear for his life, Mr Adam reportedly complied, resulting in the gang unlocking the safe and looting US$500 000 in cash along with other valuables, bringing the total value of stolen property to US$600 000.

Gora was arrested on June 27 after CID Homicide detectives received information linking him to the offence.

During questioning the accused is reported to have voluntarily admitted to being the inside source and confirmed receiving US$10 000 as his share of the proceeds.

Further investigations led to the recovery of US$4 400 and a Toyota Hiace vehicle, allegedly purchased using the stolen funds, hidden at his brother, Willard Gora’s residence.
