CHIREDZI – AT 54 years of age, long-distance runner Mr Lawrence Mahakwa continues to defy expectations, beginning each day with a rigorous 25-kilometre run along the Ngundu–Tanganda Highway, even in the biting cold of winter mornings.
For most, a new day begins with a warm beverage or quiet prayer. But for Mahakwa, who is also a successful entrepreneur in the transport sector, the day only truly begins after a run.
“Running has become so deeply rooted in my life that I struggle without it. It is not just about fitness, it keeps me out of the hospital, sharpens my thinking, and brings me peace. The feeling of movement, the discipline, and the release of endorphins is an unmatched experience. I truly believe everyone should run,” he shared.
The runner, who started his career in sports in 2008, has made significant strides in recent years as he has competed in major marathons such as the Kilimanjaro marathon and achieved notable results, including coming 10th in the Two Oceans Marathon in April this year.
“I have participated in several races over the years, both locally and abroad. The Two Oceans was particularly demanding, but I am proud I completed it. I am now preparing for this year’s local events, including the Tanganda Half Marathon and the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon next month,” he added.
Mahakwa’s love for running has motivated him to establish a non-profit runners fan club for Masvingo Province to raise awareness on depression, anxiety and drug and substance abuse, while encouraging people to run to boost their mental health.
Fellow runner and club member, Mr Lemson Betha praised Mahakwa’s efforts.
“We appreciate what Mr Mahakwa is doing, he is showing us how to lead healthy lives. I have had the honour of joining his morning runs and being part of the club, which now has over 100 members. The goal is to steer young people away from drugs and unhealthy lifestyles, and towards fitness.”
This lifestyle has seen the runner travel across the region to compete at various long-distance running events, with his next target next year, despite his age, being the famous 90-kilometre Comrades Marathon in South Africa.
